ABOUT BLESS 8 - ANTONIA
Artist: Philipp Weber
Land of Origin: Germany
This painting of a young girl makes us wonder about her circumstances. Her palpable vulnerability is exacerbated by the presence of a cut on her forehead to match the one on her collarbone.
Traditional Western, Christian depiction springs to mind, through the image of a red cloak holding the young woman in a state of protection as she sits catatonic. Virtuosity, martyrdom and sacrifice are strongly associated with with red capes in the visuals of religious history.
Her gaze spirals into a dissociated glare, making us wonder about the story that surrounds her. Her pupils are dilated in the presence of light which creates the feeling of ethereal transcendence. She appears rattled but stoic in the wake of this mystery.
